Muhammad Azhan

Azhan is a 4th-year Ph.D. candidate in Chemistry at Iowa State University (ISU), specializing in solid-state chemistry. He earned his undergraduate degree in Chemistry from LUMS, where he founded the LUMS Society of Chemical Sciences & Engineering and the university’s chapter of the Materials Research Society (MRS). His doctoral research focuses on the synthesis and characterization of high-entropy alloys, intermetallic compounds for energy-related applications, particularly water electrolysis. Azhan is deeply passionate about student leadership and advocacy, having served as a Student Government Senator for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (2023–24), Graduate College Senator (2024–25), and GPSS Senator for the Department of Chemistry (2023–25). He has been recognized with the GPSS Teaching and Leadership Awards, the ISU Teaching Excellence Award, and the 2024 Empowerment Award from Student Government. Now serving as GPSS President for the 2025–2026 academic year, Azhan is committed to driving initiatives that promote accessibility, wellness, and academic support for graduate and professional students. Outside academics, he enjoys playing board games, participating in science outreach, and exploring new cafes around Ames and Des Moines.
